How AI Is Changing Radio,
Telecommunications and
Electromagnetics

Everywhere in our professional and personal worlds, we see the impact of artificial intelligence. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the tools and technologies that make up AI have substantially, yet almost imperceptibly revolutionized the work performed by iNARTE-certified professionals.

The impact shows up quite literally in each part of the iNARTE acronym. The fields of radio, telecommunications, and electromagnetics have all seen positive change through the use of AI.

Following is a brief overview of the latest findings in these areas, illustrated through recently published technical papers and research.

Radio

Disciplines such as spectrum management, radio frequency identification, and microwave transmission, among others, are all part of the portfolio for a wide range of iNARTE-certified professionals.

Agentic AI has proven invaluable in helping those involved in the testing of advanced 5G and 6G systems make decisions based on more than human judgment.

A recent paper, “Beyond Heuristics: Forging the AI-Native RAN with AI L2 Radio Resource Scheduling,” produced by Samsung Research, provides deep insight into the decision-making pathways that engineers and other technicians can apply through the use of AI. As interconnectivity and bandwidth have increased exponentially, the reliance upon these tools to help make determinations can be a tremendous benefit in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness.

Telecommunications

iNARTE telecommunications engineers and technicians work within industries such as telephonic communications, utilities, airlines, energy, and others.

These sectors have already been largely transformed by AI, but we’re still in the very early stages of those changes, and operators need to continue to adapt. Those working anywhere in telecommunications understand the great value in making networks more resilient and efficient, and AI is a tool that provides great support for that undertaking.

From the perspective of operational efficiency, the “Global Mobile Trends 2026” report from GSMA Intelligence offers a neat encapsulation of the capital expenditures and revenue drivers that come from the technological innovations experienced by the telecommunications industry. This includes not just AI, but also autonomous networks, quantum computing, and more.

Electromagnetics

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are key testing roles for a great number of iNARTE professionals.

There is a wide range of very interesting research in this area, much of it coming from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE has a number of high-profile in-person events with excellent technical paper presentations, including the 2026 IEEE International Symposium on EMC+SIPI coming up in August.

An interesting paper published by IEEE came out late last year. Titled, “Application of Artificial Intelligence Technology in Electromagnetic Research of High-Speed Maglev Trains,” it was initially presented at IEEE’s 2025 International Conference on Electromagnetics in Advanced Applications (ICEAA).

The paper delves into how AI can assist EMC professionals in several elements of this critical work, including modeling, optimization, design, and analysis.

Summing up

AI systems are rapidly being embedded into the testing and performance protocols of technical professionals everywhere. As seen above, there is some excellent research being done to examine the repercussions of these advancements and help provide context as to how they will affect the fields of radio, telecommunications, and electromagnetics going forward.

We encourage you to do your own research in this space and, if you have interesting projects using AI to advance the field, develop technical papers of your own. The literature within the industry is only as good and as relevant as those doing the work and contributing their perspectives to industry organizations, conferences, and publications. Sharing your knowledge and best practices with a wider audience is the way to ensure that industry remains on track to take the fullest possible advantage of the benefits of AI now and in the future.
