World Engineering Day (formerly known as the Global Day of the Engineer) takes place annually on March 4. The celebrations are jointly sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO).
The purpose of World Engineering Day is to acknowledge the achievements of engineers and their contributions to shaping our modern world. From designing innovative technologies to improving our daily lives, there is little question that engineers play a vital role in society.
World Engineering Day also serves as a reminder that we must inspire future generations to pursue careers in this field and continue to push the boundaries of what can be achieved through engineering.
This event, which has become a source of pride and inspiration for numerous engineers, now also includes a strong focus on sustainable development (in fact, the full name is “World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development”). UNESCO helps ensure that future generations of engineers and scientists, especially women and youth, will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges. Through World Engineering Day, UNESCO raises awareness of the role of engineering in modern life, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). UNESCO’s key initiatives in engineering include the UNESCO Engineering Reports and the UNESCO science and engineering entrepreneurship bootcamps, among others.
As the primary international certification program for telecommunications engineers and technicians, the International Association for Radio, Telecommunications and Electromagnetics (iNARTE) is proud to support World Engineering Day. iNARTE’s professional certifications are offered to qualified engineers and technicians in the fields of telecommunications, electromagnetic compatibility/ interference (EMC/EMI), product safety (PS), electrostatic discharge control (ESD), and wireless systems installation.
Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into making our world a better place through engineering.
