In the dark about upcoming changes to ISO 14001?

There is a fair amount of ‘noise’ around the revised ISO 9001 Quality Standard, but what is happening with ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)? Exemplar Global brings you the latest update on this planned revision.

The proposed transition to the ISO 9001:2015 Standard has dominated the dialogue around the revision of several ISO Standards. Whilst there is still some confusion around what needs to be done and when, most in the industry have started to get their head around the proposed changes for ISO 9001. However, information and/or discussion for people working with Environmental Management Systems (EMS) around ISO 14001 has been sparse. So what IS going on in the background?

Firstly, the estimated publication date of the FDIS (Final Draft Standard) is still on track for later this month (May 2015). Release of the official update to the current ISO 14001 International Standard is anticipated to be published in September 2015.

Once published, there will be a three-year transition period to the new standard.

As with the changes to ISO 9001, Exemplar Global, as a leading international personnel certification body will be a key collaborator in the development an on-line course and assessment on behalf of the IAAR (International Association of Accredited Registrars), that will assist existing certified auditors with the transition to ISO 14001:2015. Organizations that train new auditors on the standard will also need to adapt their current courses.

With this high-level of industry expert participation, the course and assessment provide a new opportunity for the consistent interpretation between certification bodies’ auditors, their clients and other stakeholders.
